To the Living Spirit. New University 2011+

21 01 2009
Invitation to Heidelberg University press conference on Monday, 9 February, 10.30 a.m. (Neue Universität) — Major building renovation project to mark the 625th anniversary of the University — The “living spirit” in all its facets is the unifying concept and the emblem of corporate identity
Dear representatives of the media,
“The Future. Since 1386!” is the motto of Heidelberg University. The University has been eminently successful in the Initiative for Excellence organised by the Federal and State governments. In international rankings Heidelberg figures as one of Germany’s leading universities. In terms of scientific and scholarly endeavour it cuts an excellent figure and is a decisive feature in Germany’s profile as an outstanding location of higher education and research. Its achievements in the natural sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences, its strategic alliances with other research institutions and the 2008 Nobel Prize for medicine all go to show that Heidelberg is one of the places where the future is taking place right now.

In 2011 Heidelberg University will be celebrating its 625th anniversary: 625 years spent shaping the future, 625 years of the living spirit. “To the living spirit” is also the dedication inscribed over the doors of the New University, erected in the early 1930s with the help of donations from America. The University has made this dedication the motto for a highly ambitious venture. In the short and medium term, this venture centres first of all on the renovation of the entire ensemble of buildings that constitute the New University and on a fundraising campaign for that purpose. The “living spirit” in all its facets is the unifying concept for this programme and the emblem for the ideal of corporate identity that we intend to live up to, both now and in the future. We are delighted to announce that this campaign will be undertaken under the patronage of former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, himself an alumnus of Heidelberg University.

To give you an idea of the project “To the Living Spirit” and its objectives we would like to extend to you a very cordial invitation to attend a press conference on Monday, 9 February, 10.30 a.m. in lecture hall 14 of the New University (Grabengasse 3-5, Universitätsplatz, 2nd floor).

The Rector, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel, will give an outline of the motives and objectives of the campaign “To the Living Spirit”, one of the biggest fundraising projects in the history of Heidelberg University and at the same time a programme designed to fortify corporate commitment to Heidelberg as a comprehensive university against the background of its 625th anniversary. Dr. h.c. Manfred Lautenschläger, one of the University’s most generous benefactors and chairman of the board of trustees of the Stiftung Universität Heidelberg foundation will explain the motives behind his commitment to this project. Together with Bernhard Schreier, chairman of the board of the Stiftung Universität Heidelberg foundation and CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, he will also elucidate the supporting role to be played by the foundation in this project. The press conference will be chaired by Prof. Dr. h.c. mult Paul Kirchhof, former constitutional court judge, director of the Institute of Financial and Fiscal Law and spokesman of the campaign.

We kindly request you to indicate your intention to attend the press conference by filling out the reply form appended and sending it back via fax or e-mail, ideally by Tuesday, 3 February latest. If you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact us. We greatly look forward to seeing you there!

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Tanja Fichtner
