Brazilian Ambassador to Visit the Universität Heidelberg

Public lecture on “Brazil and the International System in Times of Change”

Dr. Everton Vieira Vargas, Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Germany, will visit Heidelberg University on Monday, 19 October 2009. He will meet Rector Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel for an hour of talks followed by a public lecture.

According to Prof. Dr. Peter-Christian Müller-Graff, Director of the Institute of German and European Commercial and Economic Law, who arranged the visit, the ambassador’s aims are to make the acquaintance of Germany’s oldest university and to discuss the potential for further academic cooperation. Heidelberg University’s partner institution in Brazil is the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. In addition, the University also has many contacts with various other Brazilian higher-education and research institutions at faculty and department level. On the Latin American education market Heidelberg University also has a graduate centre of its own, the Heidelberg Center for Latin America.

Alongside the ambassador, the rector and Prof. Müller-Graff, the other participants in the talks at the University will be Dr. Luiz Alberto da Vianna Moniz Bandeira, honorary consul of Brazil in Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Erik Jayme of the Institute of Foreign and International Private and Economic Law, Prof. Dr. Edgar Radtke of the Department of Romance Studies, commissioner for the partnership with the university in Porto Alegre, and Dr. Joachim Gerke, head of the university’s International Relations Office.

In the subsequent lecture, which is open to the public, Dr. Vieira Vargas will be talking on “Brazil and the International System in Times of Change”. The lecture will take place in the Great Hall of the Old University, Grabengasse 1, and will begin at 6 p.m.
