Life Sciences and Medicine Ranked First in Germany

28 November 2017

Excellent placement in Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject for physics

In a subject ranking list published in 2017 by the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, Heidelberg life sciences and medicine were rated the best in Germany. Like last year, Heidelberg University again ranked first in Germany in the "Life Sciences" (34th internationally) and "Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health" (30th internationally) categories, followed in each case by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The physical sciences also fared well, with a national ranking of three and an international ranking of 32. Heidelberg arts and humanities placed 27th worldwide and 4th in Germany. For the first time in 2017, psychology was included in the subject ranking. Here, Ruperto Carola was rated 48th, earning it 4th place in Germany. In the overall list of the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, Heidelberg ranked 45th, making it one of the world's "Top 50" universities. Ruperto Carola is among Germany's three best universities, after LMU and TUM.

The criteria for the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking by subject are the same as for the overall ranking, but are weighted differently for each subject group. The weighting is based on various performance indicators grouped into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.
