In the national comparison, Heidelberg ranked first in four academic disciplines and second in another four. Those rankings were also strong internationally.

In neuroscience and behaviour (28th worldwide), space science (33), clinical medicine (34) and microbiology (41), Heidelberg ranks first among the German universities. It is also very strong in molecular biology/genetics (35), physics (40), pharmacology/toxicology (47) and biology/biochemistry (54), placing second in Germany. Ruperto Carola is also among the world’s top 100 in psychiatry/psychology and the arts and humanities.

The ranking takes a total of twelve weighted indicators into account, the primary ones being research and reputation. The evaluation criteria also include global and regional research reputation and a number of factors specific to citations and publications. A total of 1,000 universities were rated based on data from the Thomson Reuters corporation. The Best Global Universities Ranking is published by the American media company, U.S. News & World Report.
