University Senate Announces Members of New University Council

Rector Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebke: "We have succeeded in putting together a first-class University Council for Heidelberg"—"The selection of the members is fully in line with the significance of this new council, which will now be the University's most important supervisory body"

At its meeting of 2 May 2000, the Senate of the University announced the members of the new University Council. "We have succeeded in putting together a first-class University Council," commented Rector Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebke after the meeting. "We have enlisted the cooperation of personalities of a stature fully in line with the significance of the new council as the University's most important supervisory body," he said further. The University Law allots to the Council the responsibility for the development of the University. It is also called upon to propose measures serving profile enhancement and the improvement of academic excellence and competitiveness. The Council further acts as an overseer for the conduct of ongoing business by the Rector's office.

The external members

The University Law stipulates 13 members for the Council, six of them from outside the University. The external members announced by the Senate on 2 May are: Dr. Britta E. Buhlmann, director of the Palatine Gallery in Kaiserslautern; Dr. Ulrich Cartellieri, member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank AG; Prof. Dr. Walter Kröll, chairman of the executive board of the German Aerospace Centre e.V.; Manfred Lautenschläger, chairman of the supervisory board of the MLP AG; Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard, director of the Max Planck Institute of Developmental Biology in Tübingen; His Excellency Avi Primor, vice-president of the University of Tel Aviv.

The appointment of the members has been undertaken in agreement with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Art, as prescribed by the University Law.

The internal members

Six internal members taking up their duties as of 1 October 2000 for a period of three years were also announced by the Senate. A seventh member from the "non-professorial staff" of the University will be elected at the next meeting. The professors on the new Council are: Prof. Dr. Eva Terberger-Stoy (Faculty of Economics), Prof. Dr. Peter Hommelhoff (Faculty of Law), Prof. Dr. Volker Sellin (Faculty of Philosophy and History) and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wolfrum (Faculty of Chemistry). Student representative in the new body is Christoph von Friedeburg (Faculty of Physics), while the group of "other staff members" is represented by Gerd Apfel, the present chairman of the University staff council.
