Invitation to the University of Heidelberg Summer Athletics Event
In cooperation with the University Sports Club Heidelberg 1899 Heidelberg Mile, Rieder Javelin Cup, MLP University Cross-Country Run Date: 25 June from 4.50 p.m.
In collaboration with the USC Heidelberg, the Institute of Sport and Sport Science of the University of Heidelberg has devised a programme of choice sporting fare for the annual Summer Athletics Event on 25 June. Among the contests on the programme are the "Heidelberg Mile" (starts 4.50 p.m.), the "Professor Dr. H. Rieder Javelin Cup" (starts 5 p.m.) and the revival of the MLP University Cross-Country Run (starts 6 p.m.). Other disciplines, including the 100 metre sprint, will be featuring top stars, including the Nigerian Olympic team, participating in the 100-metres and 400-metres events. The Nigerians are preparing for the Olympic Games at a training camp in Stuttgart and are taking advantage of the Heidelberg event to see how well they are shaping up (Heidelberg University Stadium, Im Neuenheimer Feld 700).
The traditional international Heidelberg Mile will also feature some interesting competitors, e.g. from Kenya and Tunisia (start 5 p.m.), all doing their best to undercut the 4-minute mark over the unaccustomed distance of 1,609 metres (English mile). But there is also a contest over the same distance for all-comers (start 4.50 p.m.). Here amateur competitors and hobby runners can attempt to break their own personal record.
Excitement is also anticipated at the first-ever "Prof. Dr. Hermann Rieder Javelin Cup". Here Matthias Rau (USC Heidelberg), the Baden-Württemberg and South German university javelin champion, will attempt to outshine other German competitors in his own stadium. The Cup is an appreciation of the work done for German javelin culture by Professor Rieder, the former director of the Institute of Sport and Sport Science. Rieder was also Federal Coach and the trainer of Olympic gold-medallist Klaus Wolfermann.
A cross-country run over 8.5 kilometres through the Handschuhsheimer Feld is scheduled for 6 p.m. The circuit takes the competitors from the University Stadium to the Dossenheim motorway and back, past orchards, vegetable allotments and through some very attractive country. It is designed for students and free-time runners, but teams can also participate. Five-member teams entering the contest can win one of the attractive prizes earmarked fir the event.
For this event, every participant needs to register in person at the University Sport Secretariat, Im Neuenheimer Feld 700. Upon payment of the participation fee the runners will be given their starting number.
Registration by fax (06221/544387) is sufficient for all the other contests (100m, 300m, 400m, mile, men and women).
