The new European Center for Digital Resources in Chinese Studies (ChinaResource.org) has just started its work at the Department of Chinese Studies of the University of Heidelberg. ChinaResource.org is a service centre offering access (wherever possible via the internet) to a broad spectrum of China-related digital resources. These have become an important, and in many cases indispensable, supplement to the literature on China already existing in the print-medium format.
The prime intention is to improve access to information on China for users in Germany and Europe and provide students and scholars with an opportunity to explore and discover the new resources of the digital age for their work. In the long term the aim is to pave the way for the evolution first of a virtual and later of a digital library in the field of Chinese Studies.
The Center is part of the Department of Chinese Studies at Heidelberg University, which already has an internationally noted stock of Chinese and China-related holdings to its name: 120,000 books, 3,800 journals and 1,500 films. These will continue to represent the major resource for ongoing research and teaching work and new acquisitions are being added continuously.
The Center and the planned library receive generous financial support from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation (Essen). The funding is planned for an initial three years, with the possibility of extension for a further two years. Its total value is 1.5 million deutschmarks.
