On 25 January the exhibition of the Prinzhorn Collection opened its doors at the Museu d'art Contemporani de Barcelona under the title "traces sobre el bloc màgic". Last year this exhibition was on tour in the United States with the title "Traces upon the Wunderblock", starting at the Drawing Center in New York and moving from there to the Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. For its showing of the Collection, the Drawing Center has since been awarded the American AICA critics' award for the "best exhibition in the public domain" in the year 2000.
The present tour is a continuation of the "Insane Beauty" exhibition which started in Charleroi (Belgium) in 1995 and also caused quite a stir when it came back to Heidelberg Castle in 1996. Accordingly, the University of Heidelberg is also very gratified by the American award presented to the director of the Drawing Center, Catherine de Zegher, during a festive ceremony at the Studio Museum of Harlem N.Y. on 4 December 2000.
The American branch of the "Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art" (AICA) founded in Paris in 1949 annually invites about 400 of its members to select the "best exhibition" and the "best catalogue" from the various art shows on view in and around New York, distinguishing between museums in New York, museums outside New York, commercial galleries and exhibitions in the public domain. Further prizes are awarded for exhibitions by upcoming artists, photographers, architects, designers and video artists. The Drawing Center has been awarded a second prize on two occasions in the past. Its showing of the Prinzhorn Collection was the first to win it the distinction for "best exhibition" of the year.
After the show in Barcelona, the works of the Collection will be returning to Heidelberg in time for the opening of the new Prinzhorn Museum in September 2001.
