Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernhard Eitel, a geographer, is the President of Heidelberg University. He represents the university both internally and externally and exercises the university’s domiciliary rights.
The President is responsible for the university’s development and strategic orientation, as well as fundraising. Other duties include appointments to professorships as well as the governance of the Excellence Initiative.
Equal opportunity issues are handled in the President's Office under the aegis of the President. Further, the President is the head of the University Senate and all of its committees and he bears overall responsibility for the medical faculties.
The President serves a six-year term.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernhard Eitel has been President of Heidelberg University since 1 October 2007. He was re-elected by the senate for another six years in December 2012.
