Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel, a geographer, is the Rector of Heidelberg University. He represents the university both internally and externally and exercises the university’s domiciliary rights.
The rector is responsible for the university’s development and strategic orientation, as well as fundraising. Other duties include appointments to professorships as well as the governance of the Excellence Initiative.
Equal opportunity issues are handled in the rectorate under the aegis of the rector. Further, the rector is the head of the University Senate and all of its committees and he bears overall responsibility for the medical faculties.
The rector serves one six-year term, with re-election possible once.
