It has been a part of the Heidelberg Institute of Botanics (HIP) since the year 2001. Its collection of living plants and herbarium, parts of which are open to the public, make it one of the most important and species-rich botanical gardens in Germany, and Europe. Its main uses include academic research and teaching, education, public use, and protection of species.
