100 years of Equal Opportunities

„100 Years Women at Heidelberg University” – an Exhibition

In the Grand Duchy of Baden women are admitted to the State Universities in Heidelberg and Freiburg since February 28th in 1900. Before, women were only accepted as “audience” needing an explicit permission of the lecturer. On April 28th in 1900 the first four women enrolled as regular students at the University of Heidelberg: Georgine Sexauer in Philosophy, Rahel Gotein, Irma Klausner and Else von der Leyen in Medicine.

This long standing tradition of women at the University of Heidelberg was reason enough to dedicate an exhibition to those 100 Years of women at Heidelberg University, which was presented at the 2nd Heidelberg Autumn Symposium on Gender Studies.

The history of women at Ruperto Carola, their activities and decisions were presented, focusing on the topics “education”, “politics, culture and society” and “Heidelberg University”, illustrated with the vitas of women students and academics from 1900 until now.
