Inhalt:

The historic election that swept Barack Obama into office as the first African-American President of the United States led many commentators and scholars to believe that domestic and foreign policy would undergo a radical transformation from the past.  President Obama was expected to be a liberal’s liberal: pushing for an increased role of the state in promoting social and economic well-being at home, and pursuing a more cooperative and multilateral approach to foreign policy abroad.  This course will examine the first few years of President Obama’s foreign policy to see if candidate Obama’s “change we can believe in” slogan has been translated into foreign policy.  We will begin with an overview of theoretical and empirical knowledge about the factors that drive U.S. foreign policy.  We will then apply this knowledge to Obama’s foreign policy, comparing him to previous Presidents, and situating him in the long run of U.S. foreign policy relations.  We will look at specific cases and issues to highlight President Obama’s impact on foreign policy.  Readings will include the following required foreign policy textbook, as well as a number of primary documents and journal articles.
