Department Profile
Research and teaching focus on general history of the 19th and 20th centuries, global history, the history of Europe, on methods and theories. Within the history of Europe, European expansion, imperialism, and integration receive detailed consideration. Special attention is devoted to global history and the entanglements of local and national actors. For global history, a geographic opening is not as pivotal as a methodical one. The approach to global history, therefore, explores boundaries and their transgression in the broadest sense. It transcends the history of the nation and historical comparison and prefers the analysis of transcultural processes, concepts, and actors. Global history has a strong interdisciplinary focus and connects history to area studies. Colonial policy and decolonisation on the African continent as well as the history of international organisations and networks are core areas of research and teaching. These fields are closely linked to the research project "Asia and Europe in a Global Context". The Department provides an attractive research environment and access to a broad range of cross-disciplinary activities due to its orientation towards transculturality and asymmetrical power relations.
