Molecular Biotechnology - Bachelor of Science (BSc)

The Bachelor program in Molecular Biotechnology is a modern, interdisciplinary program at one of the finest universities in Germany.

The concept of the program

Which interactions of DNA, proteins and other compounds are crucial for individual cells and cellular cellular networks? Which cellular alterations lead to diseases and which of these can be affected on a molecular level? Which innovative molecular biotechnical approaches are needed to cure wide-spread diseases like cancer?

To answer thee questions scientist do not only need technical expertise in biochemical and cell biological techniques but also a fundamental knowledge of Chemistry and Pharmacology as well as biophysical measurement methods and computer simulation.  The Bachelor program in Molecular Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary program, which combines the basics on Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics with more refined fields of studies like microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology and Pharmacology.

Furthermore, theoretical and practical courses are offered in process engineering, fermentation and cell culture techniques. Students in their third year specialize in one of the three mail topics: drug design, biophysical chemistry or bioinformatics. An industry internship as well as several courses on soft skills like scientific English, management and presentation strategies are also part of the program.

The network

This interdisciplinary Bachelor program is based at the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology (IPMB), a modern center of drug design. The IPMB was awarded by the Akkreditierungs-, Certifizierungs- und Qualitätssicherungsinstituet ACQUIN with the Seal of quality for the bachelor program. Other faculties like the faculties of Chemistry and Physics as well as a wider variety of renowned research institutes (Center for Biochemistry Heidelberg (BZH), Center for Molecular Biology Heidelberg (ZMBH), Interdisciplinary Center for Neurosciences (IZN), Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Mathematics (IWR), German Cancer Research Institute (DKFZ), Max-Planck Institute for Medical research, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, Max-Planck Institute for Metal Research Stuttgart) also take part in the education of the students.

This excellent scientific environment guarantees the highest level of competence and actuality in teaching and offers the students the unique opportunity for early scientific specialization.
