Information in Computational Biology

During this course students will be introduced to recent tools and methods in bioinformatics and computational biology, e.g. recent databases, sequence alignment tools, protein structure prediction tools, biological network assembly, image processing and computational biochemistry.

The focus is on the very practical use of the respective tools and their limitations rather than on the theoretical background which follows later. Students will learn how to make more of their respective experimental data with the use of modern computational techniques. Moreover, students should get familiar with abstracting biological knowledge to mathematical formulas and simply getting to know different operating systems and computational environments.
