Faculty of Biosciences
Biology is the study of life and the scientific basis of medicine and pharmacy. It covers a broad area of disciplines ranging from the molecular life sciences to the biodiversity and evolution of organisms up to biotechnology. Its rapid development in recent decades has changed the world view in all areas of life and society dramatically. Biosciences are the University’s most rapidly expanding discipline.
Research
Our Faculty is embedded in a very stimulating and interactive research community, the Heidelberg Life Sciences, which includes many colleagues from adjacent faculties and excellent non-university research institutions. Research encompasses core areas of biology as well as interdisciplinary border areas. In the core areas, research is focused on biochemistry, molecular biology, cell and developmental biology, genetics, neurobiology, physiology, the evolution of living matter from early cells to humans, biodiversity and ecosystems. The interdisciplinary areas include biophysics and bioinformatics, biotechnology and biomedicine and environmental biology. Research is located at one department institute (Institute for Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology) and four university centers including the Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH), the Interdisciplinary Center for Neurosciences (IZN), the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH), ...read more
Biosciences Degrees
Our teaching program is tightly coupled and routed in our research program. We are committed to teach and train students at high quality and at the cutting edges of science. Courses of studies include two Bachelor-Masters programs, the state examination in Pharmacy, the state examination for teachers at secondary schools and a Ph.D. program with a wide scope in molecular biology. The faculty is currently educating 2438 students. Among them are 1364 in the undergraduate or Masters courses, and 1074 in the PhD program. With 111 Bachelor, 133 Diploma or Masters graduations, 71 State Exams and 216 PhDs awarded in the study year 2010, Heidelberg is at the top of all German biology faculties. ...read moreQuick-Links
