DIGITAL MEDIA AND THE FUTURE OF ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION
The lecture is open to the public. Please register in advance.
Abstract
Digital Media and the Future of Academic Communication
Digital media are rapidly transforming the landscape of communication, and it seems certain that fifteen years from now, say — and quite possibly much sooner — the academic article, book, and lecture will all look dramatically different than they do today. While such change can be unsettling, I believe that the new ease with which we can combine image, sound, and animation with written and spoken words is an opportunity to re-examine longstanding habits, and to reconsider what it means to communicate, think, and understand. My lecture will itself be a multimedia presentation with concrete examples and practical tips.
Shigehisa Kuriyama
Reischauer Institute Professor of Cultural History at Harvard University / Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2014/15
Professor Kuriyama is actively engaged in expanding the horizons of teaching and scholarly communication through the creative use of digital technologies. He was a pioneer in the development of course trailers at Harvard, founded the Harvard Shorts competition for scholarly clips, and has held workshops on multimedia presentations of research at many universities around the world.
In his research he explores broad philosophical issues (being and time, representations and reality, knowing and feeling) through the lens of specific topics in comparative medical history (Japan, China, and Europe). His recent work includes studies on the imagination of strings in the metaphysics and experience of presence, the visceral fear of excrement in Western medicine, the transformation of money into a palpable humor in Edo Japan, the nature of hiddenness in traditional Chinese medicine, and the surprising web of connections binding the histories of ginseng, opium, tea, silver, and MSG.

INTERDISZIPLINÄR FORSCHEN — SPRUNGBRETT ODER RISIKO?
A workshop for doctoral students from all academic disciplines
Was macht gute interdisziplinäre Forschung aus?
