Application for subjects with open admission
International applicants who are EU or EEA citizens apply directly to the International Relations Office of Heidelberg University through the online application portal for degree programmes without restricted admission. The same applies for all international applicants holding a German university entrance qualification/Abitur, or a German university entrance qualification from a German school abroad.
Exception: If the degree programme desired is a combination of admission-restricted and non-restricted subjects, the non-restricted subjects can also be included on the application for degree programmes with restricted admission.
The completed application must be submitted with all the necessary documents and certified copies.

Application deadlines:
- 15 July for the following winter semester (preclusive time limit – date of receipt)
- 15 January for the following summer semester (preclusive time limit – date of receipt)
Other deadlines may apply for certain subjects or programmes; please refer to the catalogue of subjects. The application deadlines are legally binding for all subjects and programmes.
The university is not required to officially establish the facts of an individual case if documents are missing, incomplete, or not certified. This also applies if the university is still in possession of documents from a previous application process. The International Relations Office of Heidelberg University does not notify international applicants if the documents required for the application procedure are missing or not submitted in the correct form.
Application forms
The following documents should be attached to the application for admission.
- Certified copy of school leaving certificate that grants the right of entrance into an institution of higher education in the country of issue (e.g., Abitur, Baccalauréat, GCE - A&O-Level, School Leaving Certificate, etc.) including the accompanying lists with individual marks. A certified translation into German is also required (except for English or French certificates).
- Certified copies of all tertiary education certificates (colleges, academies, etc.) previously acquired, including associated lists of individual marks for each semester or academic year. A certified translation into German is also required (except for English or French certificates). If the applicant has completed any semesters of study at a German university or is currently enrolled, the respective certificates of matriculation must be attached (originals or certified copies).
- Certified copy of the certificate that the applicant successfully passed the preparatory course assessment test, if one was taken in Germany, including the list of individual marks.
- Certified copies of certificates of successfully completed university entrance examinations taken in other countries, including the individual marks, and if available, the notification of admission received from the foreign university. A certified translation into German is also required (except for English or French certificates).
- Proof of proficiency in German; to qualify for the DSH language examination at Heidelberg University, the applicant must provide written evidence that he or she has completed at least 1,000 to 1,200 hours of German instruction at a recognised institution.
- 1 passport photograph (no larger than 4 x 5 cm)
- Copy of passport (page showing name in the Latin alphabet)
- 3 international reply coupons (Coupon-Réponse International)
