Admission and application procedure

Admission procedure

Undergraduate degree programmes - first semester

University places for prospective students from non-EU/EEA countries with foreign university entrance qualifications are directly allocated by the university.

Admission procedures differ between subjects. An assessment of the whether the applicant fulfils the admission requirements (university entrance qualification, German language skills...) will generally be conducted in the case of applications for a degree programme that have been submitted in time and in the prescribed form.

In some degree programmes, the applicant’s suitability will further be assessed in the context of an entrance examination procedure. Applicants who fulfil the requirements in accordance with the respective regulations on the university’s entrance examination procedure will be admitted to the degree programme.

Depending on the subject, 5-10% of places in subjects with restrictions on admission (Numerus Clausus, NC) are allocated to applicants from non-EU/EEA countries with a foreign university entrance qualification. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available university places, the university will implement an own selection procedure for the respective subject. Only the best applicants will be admitted.

Application procedure

Undergraduate degree programmes - first semester

Prospective students from non-EU/EEA countries with a foreign university entrance qualification must apply for all degree programmes at Heidelberg University with the intended qualification “Bachelor’s degree” or “state examination”.

Applications for all undergraduate degree programmes must be made via the online application platform for international prospective students.
The PDF file generated by the platform at the end of the online application procedure must be printed and signed by the applicant. It must then be submitted with all necessary documents to the university before expiration of the respective application period. More information on the application documents can be accessed here.

The standard application period applies for all undergraduate degree programmes at Heidelberg University (May to 15 July for the winter semester; November to 15 January for the summer semester). The application period constitutes a statutory cut-off period. Application documents submitted to Heidelberg University after expiration of the application period will not be considered in the selection procedure.

Please note that there is a separate, two-tier application procedure for the degree programmes in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry with the intended qualification “state examination” (see below).

Applicants from non-EU/EEA countries with a foreign university entrance qualification may only choose one course of studies per application semester (a 100% subject or a combination of two subjects). It is not possible to indicate an alternative desired course of studies.

Medicine, pharmacy and dentistry

The application procedure for medicine, pharmacy and dentistry with the intended qualification “state examination” is a two-tier application process (two steps).

Step 1: Request of so-called preliminary documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) from uni-assist e.V.
uni-assist e.V. is a service centre that assesses the educational backgrounds of applicants from non-EU/EEA countries. The application for assessment of foreign certificates and issuance of preliminary documentation must be submitted to uni-assist e.V. no later than 1 July for the following winter semester.

Step 2: Application for a university place at Heidelberg University.
The application for a university place must be made to Heidelberg University directly via the online platform for international prospective students.

The preliminary documentation issued by uni-assist e.V. must be attached in the original to the Heidelberg University application. Your application for admission to Heidelberg University will not be processed and therefore rejected without the preliminary documentation.

More information on the application procedure for medicine, pharmacy and dentistry as well as on uni-assis e.V. and the required documents can be accessed at http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/md/zentral/international/uni_assist_engl.pdf
