Application and Admission Requirements - Higher Semester

International applicants who have already begun a university degree programme in Germany or abroad may, under certain conditions, apply to enter the desired subject at Heidelberg University in a higher subject-related semester.

Application for a higher subject-related semester takes place either through a university transfer/ Hochschulortswechsel or through a Quereinstieg.

University transfer / Hochschulortswechsel

This applies to whoever has already studied a degree programme of the same name in Germany or in the EU. It could be that the application in the scope of a Hochschulortswechsel requires you to append a certificate of recognition of your credits and grades to date. In any case, students who would like to change their place of study are urgently recommended to contact the respective departmental advisor at Heidelberg University before applying, to discuss the curriculum, their study plan, and the necessary prerequisites.

University transfer / Hochschulortswechsel in subjects with admission restriction in a higher subject-related semester

Places in subjects with admission restrictions in higher semesters (cf. subject catalogue) can only be awarded when there are free places available in the desired subject.

An application for admission in the scope of a Hoschschulortswechsel may be requested by students who have already been enrolled at a university in an EU member state and wish to continue taking the same subject at Heidelberg University in a higher semester.

Admission in the context of changing universities within Germany can always only be granted to the subject-related semester following the current subject-related semester. In the case of an intended university transfer from abroad the application must be accompanied by a notification of recognition of credits and grades. You can apply for recognition of previous academic results from the competent examinations board of the respective subject (Central State Examinations Office or Examinations Office of Heidelberg University).
Please note that some study courses are subject to a Studienjahr, which means that only certain subject-related semesters are open for applications in a given semester (1st, 3rd, 5th, … semester in the winter semester; 2nd, 4th, 6th, … semester in the summer semester).

Applying for a Hochschulortswechsel in a subject with admission restriction in a higher subject-related semester calls for an online application. At the end of your online application you will generate a printout of a PDF document, which must be sent to Heidelberg University by post, with all required documents and before the closing date.

Information on the necessary application documents is available here.

In order to participate in the application procedure, you need to apply in due and proper form by 15 January for the following summer semester and by 15 July for the following winter semester. The application deadlines will be strictly implemented.

An application in the scope of a Quereinstieg must in any case be accompanied by a certificate of recognition, which can be presented up to four weeks after the closing date for applications.
