Programme overview

This course is intended to give leading figures in the faculties, who are responsible fort he planning and conducting oft he medical course, the opportunity to engage with modern educational theories and teaching methods taken from practice. They are likewise to become competent multipliers in their faculties, demonstrating new approaches to medical training, particularly also didactic techniques.

The course is patterned on international models and can rely on a number of highly qualified colleagues, in some cases outside the university. To guarantee the required standard it will be accompanied from the beginning by an evaluation process involving an international advisory group.

Objectives

The MME course pursues the following objectives:

  • Professionalisation of medical training
  • Raising the standard of teaching
  • Training mulipliers and leading figures, in particular at medical faculties
  • Promoting exchanges all over Germany
  • Promoting high-standard educational research

The MME seeks to reach multipliers at medical faculties in Germany, in particular (following the “train the trainer” approach).

In its statement on the efficiency, resources und size of university medical institutions of 11.11.2005 the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) saw “in the inter-faculty Master of Medical Education an important instrument for raising the quality of teaching, training multipliers and promoting exchange all over Germany”.

Course structure

The MME programme takes two years. The face-to-face learning comprises eight modules of five days each (Mon-Fri), which are generally to be completed within 18 months. That is followed by a 6-month Master’s thesis. The course is intended to admit up to 25 participants per year. The choice of applicants follows through a selection committee appointed by the AHM board. The modules are offered at selected German-speaking faculties. One oft hem includes an excursion to a prestigious university abroad. An important component of the curriculum is the independent planning, organising and evaluating of a training course or workshop at the home faculty of the respective participants (Project 1). A detailed written report concludes the project. The Master’s thesis is designed by participants as a training research project. It is presented in Module VIII and, if necessary, modified. The Master’s thesis is supervised by an expert (Project 2).

Course languages are German and English. The lecturers are recruited mainly from German and notable international faculties, and have expertise in medical education. The aim is to have each module conducted by three lecturers, with one from the home university and two others from other faculties. This leads to greater exchange between faculties and guarantees a substantive interweaving of individual contributions. That avoids a mere succession of modules from the individual faculties.

The central organisation of the MME is managed by the MME office in Heidelberg.
